1990 - From Fusion to Fire: Nalini’s Romani Chapter

Updated: Apr 24

By 1989, Nalini’s path took a dramatic turn eastward—to Kurgan, Russia (Курган, Россия), where a new contract opened the door to a transformative experience. It was a collaboration signed between her original group, Lotus (группа Лотос), a Romani artist family (цыганская семья артистов), and the Kurgan State Philharmonic (Курганская государственная филармония).

Gone were the guitar solos and soft saris. In their place came wild skirts, high heels, and the unstoppable heartbeat of Romani dance.

Nalini—then still performing under her name Наталья Подупейко (Natalya Podupeiko)—immersed herself in the fiery, passionate soul of Romani expression. With every rehearsal, she trained in fast footwork, soulful gestures, and intense emotional storytelling.

This wasn’t just performance—it was living emotion on stage. A new fire lit within her, one that would forever influence her connection to movement and meaning.
