Blue Lotus Dance Company

“We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.”
- Albert Einstein

Under the instruction and direction of master performer, choreographer, and instructor Nalini, The Blue Lotus Dance Company brings together performers from diverse dance backgrounds to showcase Bollywood, Belly Dance, and Russian Gypsy dance. We are united by a common dream: to bring excellence in Bollywood, Belly Dance, and Russian Gypsy dance to stages in the Northwest and beyond.

Blue Lotus has performed in many venues; from local festivals, events, and weddings to large-scale theatre productions – from New Year’s parties, nightclub events, golf tournaments, and conferences, to festivals such as Northwest Folklife, Seattle Rhythm Fest, the Slavic Festival, and Ananda Mela. Other venues have included the Grant Hyatt Hotel in Seattle, Chop Suey, Heaven nightclub, The Crocodile, High Dive, and Puyallup Community College.

In February 2009, Nalini and Blue Lotus produced the sold-out show "Desert Monsoon" - a two-hour show of Bollywood, Belly Dance, and Russian Gypsy dance and music at the Broadway Performance Hall in Seattle. In 2010, they performed in "Romani Soul" with vocalist-guitarist Anna Vasilevskaya and the Russian Gypsy band VIA Romen. Also in 2010, they won the troupe categories of “La Danse Orientale Belly Dance Competition” and “Belly Dancer USA.” In 2011, Nalini and The Blue Lotus Dance Company presented the full-length Belly Dance, Tribal, and Bollywood show, “Dance N.O.W." in collaboration with Bellydance Soulfire from Portland and UNMATA from Sacramento.

The Blue Lotus Dance Company offers dance programs that can be tailored to the needs and budget of almost any size event and they will delight all age groups. (We guarantee elegant and high-quality entertainment that will delight all age groups.) Our programs can be adjusted to different time frames (15 minutes, 30 minutes, one-hour, or two-hour programs) and can include varying numbers of dancers.

Blue Lotus members

Emma Lux Emma Lux
Emma has loved to dance since she was small. Her dance training began with ballet, African dances, and modern dance. She then studied at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School. During this time she maintained a broad interest in dance which led her to delve into a variety of dance forms, including Flamenco, classical Persian dance, and dances from the Middle East. She began studying with Nalini in 2008, deepening her understanding and appreciation of Belly Dance, the dances of India, and those of the Gypsies of Eastern Europe.
Shannon Sorem Shannon Sorem
Shannon was introduced to the world of bellydance in 2000. Little did she know how her passion for dance would grow! She started her studies with local teacher, Aleili and then became a student of Amelia Moore in 2001, with whom she has studied bellydance and later Turkish Roman (Turkish gypsy dance). Shannon performed as a member of The Circle, a Seattle bellydance company founded by Amelia, from 2003 to 2008. It was through her experience with The Circle that Shannon was encouraged to continue her growth as a dancer, studying a variety of bellydance styles, and to perform as a soloist as well. Shannon has studied with many local, national and international teachers and will always consider herself a student of dance. She is honored and excited to now be a member of Blue Lotus and a student of Nalini. She is thrilled to continue to learn bellydance and to step into the exciting world of bollywood under Nalini's gifted direction.
Alena Alena
Alena was born in Russia and moved to Seattle in 2005. She discovered love to dance when she was little and since then dancing has been an amazing experience in her life. Alena is grateful to her teacher, Nalini, to discover passion for Belly Dance and Bollywood dancing. Alena has been performing as a member of different dancing groups and as a soloist.
Casey Baldner Casey Baldner
Casey has a love of dance and languages from cultures all over the world. She began studying belly dance for the first time in ’99 but took a break for a few years to study abroad. While abroad she was exposed to Latin dances in Costa Rica and Flamenco in Andalusia, Spain. While attending college she took up belly dancing again and also began to study classical Indian Orissi for a few years. After moving to Seattle she took classes from local professional teachers and a year ago at folk life was inspired by the Blue Lotus Dance Co. performance, which prompted her to begin dancing under the instruction of Nalini. Since then she was invited to join the company and she is very excited to be able to dance with so many talented women and learn new styles of dance such as Bollywood and Russian Gypsy.
Julia Ochs Julia Ochs
Julia got introduced into the world of dance at the age of six back in her native Togliatti, Russia. The renowned local dance company “Schastlivoye Detstvo” (Happy Childhood) became Julia’s second home for the next 18 years. Eastern European Folk and Character dance were the two major styles the company was famous for. Training 4 times a week, performing at every imaginable city event, touring Russia and Europe, participating in regional and national dance festivals was all part of life. For the last 5 years of being with the company Julia was one of the solo dancers. After coming to the United States at the age of 24 Julia took a break from dancing while settling in the new country but quickly started to miss the excitement of being a dancer. Meeting Nalini was a game of chance. Buying 10 lottery tickets at a fundraiser event seemed like the right thing to do. One of the many prizes was a free month of belly dance classes with Nalini and sure enough – that’s what one of Julia’s tickets won. After the first class Nalini offered her to join the Blue Lotus Dance Company and the offer was graciously accepted. Her previous training came in handy when she started to learn Nalini’s choreography for Russian Gypsy and Bollywood styles. The world of belly dance presented a very interesting challenge of mastering the new kind of movement, but practice makes it perfect and there are no limits to perfection. With this in mind Julia keeps on mastering the art of belly dance and is very honored and proud to be part of the Blue Lotus Dance Company.
